Connection and inspiration from the landscape

My mother, who was an avid family photographer, gave me her Brownie Instamatic and several rolls of film when I went to my first Boy Scout camp. I think she was expecting me to photograph my fellow Scouts. I discovered then that I much preferred to photograph the landscape. These early photographs were simply pictorial records that I made for myself and my family. It wasn’t until thirty years later after I moved to Alaska that making the photographs became more important than the physical exploration. My reasons for making photographs changed, too. I have always felt connected to and inspired by the landscape. It is that connectedness and inspiration that motivates my photography.
