Redwoods in a Bed of Ferns (CAR.L45.007) B&W 2021

Redwood National Park is home to the world’s tallest trees. My instinctive response was to look up to capture the massive trees. I was surprised that this view seemed to make it more difficult to connect to and appreciate the forest. Looking across the forest at eye level gave a better sense of its grandeur and complexity. Its complexity arises because the forest is much more than just the redwoods, themselves. I was constantly in awe of the visual interplay between the ferns and dogwood and the redwoods. I made this photograph with a 4x5 Linhof Teknikardan camera and a 210mm lens.
