Typical photographs in slot canyons display warm light streaking in from overhead to illuminate a narrow passageway, often with geometrically interesting rock formations. I was looking for something more than that. I had read that the best light was yet to come, but that assumed I wanted to make a traditional photograph. In this photograph, the light from the mid-morning sun falls directly on the cross-bedded sandstone rather than being reflected from the canyon walls. The image is a study of shapes revealed in natural light. I made this photograph with a 4x5 Linhof Teknikardan camera and a 210mm lens.
